NZ Variety Bash

Coming up in March (6-15) I’ll be heading off, with a bus load of Aussies, on the NZ Variety Bash. That’s a way of fund-raising for schools and children’s charities around New Zealand. We’ll be travelling on a whacky bus, from Christchurch on the South Island, up to Auckland on the North Island.

On the pages at NZ Bash, which you can also get to by going to Adventures up the very top of the page, I’ve put details about the planned itinerary.

And then, during the Bash the plan is to update Twitter with details and a photo or two a day, which you should see on the main home page of this site.  Also, from the NZ Bash page is a page of maps, which should show both where we are during the trip and where we have been.  Of course how well all of that goes depends on how well technology behaves while I’m on the road.  There will be little / no time to tweak things during the trip, so I’m keeping fingers crossed that it works as expected!  When I get time, probably when I return to Sydney, I’ll be putting more photos online.

Not long now – just 8 more sleeps!

Jamie Oliver’s TED talk: teach our kids about food

I’ve talked before about the TED Prize. Originally the TED Prize was awarded to 3 people a year, but after a few years the realization set in that each of the TED Prize wishes was big, and took more than one year to implement well, and so for the 2010 Prize, only one winner was chosen, in order to provide better support for the winner over a longer time. And this year’s winner is Jamie Oliver. Here’s his wish:

“I wish for your help to create a strong, sustainable movement to educate every child about food, inspire families to cook again and empower people everywhere to fight obesity.”

The TED conference is on this week, and Jamie Oliver has just given a talk with details of his aim:

The wish expressed through the TED Prize is an extension of what we’ve seen already through his Ministry of Food and School Dinners campaigns. For more details of what he’s talking about see the Jamie Oliver TED Prize page.

On Twitter I read that right after Jamie’s talk he already had offfers of $2-5 million of services to kickstart this. It will be interesting to watch this played out over the next few years.
